Exercises, Equipment & Routines
Finding exercises
In the Plan tab, the Exercises section lists every exercise in the library. By default, exercises you use most are listed first, but you can change the sort order and filter to narrow things down.
Sort modes
Tap the sort icon in the top toolbar to change the order.
| Sort mode | Icon | Shows |
|---|---|---|
| Frequent | 🔥 | Your most-used exercises first |
| Recent | 🕐 | Most recently used first |
| Name | A–Z | Alphabetical |
Filtering
Tap the filter icon to open the filter panel.
- Category — Push, Pull, Legs, Core, Cardio, etc.
- Muscle group — Primary or secondary muscles targeted
- Equipment — Only show exercises compatible with equipment you have
- Exercise type — Compound, isolation, etc.
Active filters are shown as chips above the list. Tap a chip to remove it.
Custom exercises (Partial premium)
You can add your own exercises beyond the built-in library.
Free tier: Create up to 3 custom exercises. Premium: Unlimited custom exercises.
Adding a custom exercise
Tap + Add exercise at the top of the Exercises screen or at the bottom of the list.
Fill in:
- Name — How it will appear in your workouts
- Category — Used for filtering and coaching
- Tracking type — Weight x Reps, Reps Only, Reps in Time, Duration, Continuous Duration, Distance, or Pace/Distance (GPS)
- Primary muscles — The main muscle groups targeted
- Secondary muscles — Muscles that assist
- Equipment — What equipment is needed (optional, used for recommendations)
- Notes — Setup cues or reminders (shown during workouts)
Tap Save to add it to your library.
Editing a custom exercise
Tap the exercise in the list, then tap the edit icon. You can change any field except the tracking type once sets have been logged for that exercise.
Exercise detail
Tap any exercise to open its detail page.
- Muscle diagram — Visual indicator of which muscles the exercise works
- Performance chart — Your max weight (or equivalent metric) over time
- History (Premium: full history; free: last 14 days) — Every set you've ever logged, grouped by session
Scroll to the bottom to see exercises in the same category or targeting the same muscles.
Equipment
The Equipment section (reachable from the Plan tab) manages the equipment available at your gym or home.
FitSum uses your equipment list to:
- Filter exercise suggestions so you're only shown what you can do
- Personalise workout recommendations
- Set your gym tier (which also affects coaching)
Gym tiers
FitSum organises equipment into tiers that reflect different training environments.
| Tier | Examples |
|---|---|
| Home (no equipment) | Bodyweight only |
| Minimal | Resistance bands, dumbbells |
| Home gym | Barbell, bench, squat rack |
| Commercial gym | Full machine selection, cables |
Your tier is inferred automatically from the equipment you enable. It appears in your profile and affects how the coaching engine chooses exercises.
Custom equipment (Premium)
Adding equipment not in the built-in list requires a Premium subscription. Tap + Add equipment to create a custom entry. Custom items can have a unit (kg or lb), a default weight, and a paired/unpaired setting (for dumbbells, kettlebells, etc.).
Routines
A routine is a saved sequence of exercises you can start with a single tap. Every exercise and set scheme is stored so you don't need to rebuild your session each time.
The routine picker
Open the routine picker from:
- Start workout → Browse routines on the Workout tab
- The Switch routine option on the plan card
- Plan tab → Routines
The picker shows:
- Favourites — Routines you've starred, always at the top
- My routines — Routines you created
- Preset routines — Built-in routines from FitSum, organised by category
- Search — Type to filter by name across all lists
Tap a routine to preview it before starting.
Creating a routine (Partial premium)
Free tier: Create up to 2 custom routines. Premium: Unlimited custom routines.
Tap + New routine at the top of the Routines list.
Add exercises, set the target sets and reps or duration for each, and give the routine a name. Reorder exercises by dragging the handle on the right.
Routines created this way are personal to you. Preset routines from FitSum are shared and cannot be edited, but you can duplicate one and customise the copy.
Saving a session as a routine
When you complete an ad-hoc workout, you'll see a Save as routine option on the complete screen. Tap it to save the exercises and set scheme exactly as you just performed them. This is the quickest way to capture a session you want to repeat.
Favouriting routines
Tap the star icon on a routine card to favourite it. Favourited routines appear at the top of the routine picker for quick access.
